Just a small addendum to this learned discussion.
The debate seems to have centred on TEXFONTS,
but it is worth noting that it applies equally
(if not more so) to TEXINPUTS,
particularly if one uses LaTeX,
and wants to use the standard "distribs" and "contrib"
(or is it "distrib" and "contribs"?)
from the CTAN archives.
This brings up another point --
There are still some duplicated filenames
in these directories,
which causes ambiguity and confusion
if using Karl's searching algorithm.
There are also some large subdirectories
which do not belong in TEXINPUTS,
eg projects containing .mf and other files.
It would be nice if the rulers of CTAN
could re-organise things so that one could simply take
the "distribs" and "contrib" directories
as the basis for TEXINPUTS,
without thinking about it too much.
